Open source AI: Mission aborted?

The start of the generative AI wave in 2023 offered the promise of open-source large language models (LLMs) that provided no-cost access and full control over enterprise data. Despite these advantages, the open-source mission appears to be losing steam as enterprises shift toward closed, proprietary models.
Data from US-based VC firm Menlo Ventures showed that OpenAI and Anthropic now account for 57% of global enterprise spending on GenAI that reached $8.4 billion in the first six months of 2025.
