The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for infringing its copyright. The publisher claims that the companies used its content without permission or payment to train generative AI systems. The lawsuit states that the companies used the Times’ articles, investigations, opinion pieces, and more to create substitute products. The Times argues that its independent journalism is vital to democracy and that AI “hallucinations” can damage its brand. The newspaper had discussions with the tech firms, but they did not reach a resolution. The Times is seeking damages and the destruction of chatbot models containing its copyrighted material.
