Zoom seeking government approval to launch phone calling service in India

US-based communications platform Zoom has applied to the Indian government for permission to launch its phone service in the country.

“We’re working on a feature called Zoom Phone, which has been extremely popular around the world.” “We’re going through a regulatory process to get it launched in India,” Ricky Kapur, Zoom’s Asia Pacific head, said in an interview. The company has yet to reveal the specific nature of the licences and clearances it requires. The cloud-based Zoom platform will be used to make phone calls using the voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) service. It also recently launched a virtual conference platform called ‘Zoom Events’ in India, with a focus on the Indian communications market.
