Apple has named veteran researcher Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI. The major leadership change comes as the company tries to catch up in the global AI market.

He replaces long-time Apple AI chief John Giannandrea and will report directly to the senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi. Giannandrea, who has led Apple’s AI efforts since 2018, will serve as an advisor to the company until his retirement next year.
