AI breakthroughs spur race for superintelligence

Almost three years after the launch of OpenAI’s GPT3.5 in November 2022, the techno optimists would say that the world of artificial intelligence is closer to superintelligence than ever before.
From the beginning of this year, the world has seen one breakthrough launch of GenAI foundation models after another, starting with DeepSeek-R1 in January to OpenAI’s GPT-5 early this month.
OpenAI cofounder Sam Altman said in his June blog that we are closer to building “digital superintelligence”. But others are not as convinced.
