Family blames ChatGPT for teen’s suicide in lawsuit against OpenAI

On April 11, 2025, 16-year-old Adam Raine sent a photo of a noose to ChatGPT, but the bot didn’t raise alarms, direct him to an emergency hotline, or encourage him to reach out for help, according to a lawsuit filed this week. Instead, the chatbot gave him feedback on the rope’s strength, the parents allege. Hours later, Adam was dead.

His parents say the tragedy was not an accident of technology, but the direct consequence of how ChatGPT was built.
