Instagram got €405 million fine in EU over children’s privacy

Instagram is facing a €405 million fine after European Union privacy regulators reached a decision on a long-running complaint about how the social media platform handles children’s data.

The fine is for violating the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Meta was reached out to for comment on the penalty. The Instagram penalty is the largest GDPR penalty the social media gian Meta has been hit with to-date. The Instagram complaint centred on the platform’s processing of children’s data for business accounts, as well as a user registration system that the DPC discovered could result in child users’ accounts being set to “public” by default, unless the user changed the account settings to “private.”
