OpenAI bans Chinese accounts for social media surveillance

OpenAI has banned multiple accounts from China for using its ChatGPT service to support social media monitoring, according to a threat intelligence report released by the company.

The report reveals that the banned accounts were generating descriptions for a social media listening tool that provided real-time reports on anti-China protests in Western countries to Chinese security agencies. OpenAI found that the operators also used its models to proofread claims about these reports being sent to Chinese embassies and intelligence agents.
