The NYT paradox: Suing OpenAI, then signing with Amazon

The New York Times (NYT) has signed a licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing the tech giant to use its editorial content to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

But this is not something new. Other media groups, such as News Corp — the owner of The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, and The New York Post — struck similar deals with OpenAI in May last year.

What makes this development notable or even ironic is the timing: it comes even as the NYT continues a legal battle with OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement.
